The project will allow scientific research in the areas of volcanology, climatology, climate changes and oceanography. Its purpose is to strengthen the transatlantic cooperation between the United States of America and Europe through Portugal, and also unite the northern and southern hemisphere through its global reach (e.g. Brazil and South Africa).
According to the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education of Portugal, Manuel Heitor, “this project raised the attention of a significant number of private actors and large corporations” that can contribute actively for its development. The project is planned to start in 2017 and could also include the islands of São Miguel, Faial and Graciosa in the project design.
